Abstract

NBA is a well-known basketball league. Today, the NBA in the United States and the world has a huge influence. With the promotion of the national sports movement in China, there has been an increasingly high enthusiasm over the NBA games among the people. People mainly learn about the latest developments of the NBA through a variety of media, however, the major media coverage and broadcasts of NBA events are in English, hence the importance of the English translation of the NBA news which can help more people get updated on NBA news. This paper analyzes the problems and shortcomings in the translation of NBA English news to explore the strategies and methods of translation. It may be meaningful on the part of the Chinese basketball movement to communicate with and learn from foreign basketball culture. Besides, it is also helpful for translators of NBA news.
This paper attempts to base its research on the German functionalist translation theory, including the purpose, consistency, fidelity and loyalty, to analyze NBA English news translation. It tries to finds out the areas for improvement in order to help in a more profound understanding on NBA news translation. From the functionalist perspectives, through analyzing the cultural connotations contained in the Professional Terminology, Idioms, Omission in NBA English News, the study aims to explore the more practical and reasonable translation strategies and translation methods in English translation.
The purpose of this paper is to provide more reasonable translation strategies and translation concepts for the translation of NBA English news by implementing the theory of functional translation. The findings of this study may probably enhance the competence of the translator and promote the development of China's NBA journalism industry. Meanwhile, it will also contribute to the foreign exchange and development of sports in China.
